WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) met this week with Linda Downs of Waterville, Kan., to discuss her role as Waterville’s foster grandparent. Linda and her colleagues were in Washington, D.C. for the National Senior Corps Conference taking place in nearby Reston, Va.

“It was a pleasure to visit with Linda to discuss the importance of community service and volunteering,” Sen. Moran said. “Her service to students at the local preschool, as well as after-school and summer elementary programs is an example of the difference that can be made by Kansans caring for their neighbors. Thanks to the Waterville community for giving her the opportunity to visit her representatives in our nation’s capital to discuss the importance of Kansans giving back to improve their communities.”

The Foster Grandparents Program provides ways for volunteers age 55 and older to stay active by serving children and youth in their communities. These volunteers give their time and talents as role models, mentors, and friends to children in need. Downs volunteers at least 30 hours of her time each week through the Senior Corps’ Foster Grandparent Program.

Senator Moran entered a statement in the congressional record this week commending Foster Grandparents on the program’s 50th anniversary this year. Sen. Moran is particularly proud to honor the more than 500 seniors in Kansas who contribute their time and talents serving children in his state. Click here to view this statement.
