Kansas Senator Jerry Moran says it will be important to protect crop insurance and other programs in the next farm bill after recent disasters experienced by farmers and ranchers.

Moran spoke on the Senate floor during the past week about the snowstorm that dropped 20 inches of more on western Kansas during the last weekend of April.   He said the damage to the wheat crop is still being assessed, but it will be "dramatic" and some farmers may lose their entire crop.

Moran also said about 75 percent of the cattle on feed in the United States are in the area hit by the storm, and feedlots are reporting that deaths will be measured in the thousands of head.   He said this adds to the losses experienced from the wildfires in southwest Kansas just a few weeks earlier.
