The National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University has won a $23.5-million contract award that will help the Air Force sustain its aircraft fleet.

As part of an award through the Air Force Research Laboratory, NIAR will help develop a certification framework around advanced materials for automated manufacturing.

The school says in a news release the program will help bolster new in-service inspection technologies, composite repair analysis techniques and the assessment of aging composite structures on aircraft for potential life-extending enhancements.

NIAR’s newly established Advanced Technologies Lab for Aerospace Systems will lead the program.

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, who in recent years has brought leaders from all branches of the military and NASA to Wichita to see NIAR’s capabilities, said in the release that the contract shows a growing confidence in the Air Capital at the Pentagon.
