Let’s hear it for Sen. Jerry Moran.

Many of us did a double take as stories began popping up online and in newspapers reporting Moran’s recent pushback against Republican leader Mitch McConnell’s attempts to wrangle senators into passing a health care bill.

McConnell wants to shove through a new law that would leave more Americans without health coverage. But Moran, an obedient Republican in the last decade, saw it for what it was and declined to follow. He deserves applause for breaking ranks and listening to constituents instead.

“I am a product of rural Kansas,” Moran told a packed town hall meeting in Palco last week. “I understand the value of a hospital in your community, of a physician in your town, of a pharmacy on Main Street.”

What a refreshing boost for reason and thoughtful legislating. Moran is among just a few Republicans willing to listen to those they serve. The state’s other senator, Pat Roberts, has failed to respond.

Kansans, at least for now, can take comfort in knowing Moran is seriously considering their concerns.
