Spirit AeroSystems Inc. CEO Tom Gentile on Friday said that the company’s hiring push will exceed its previous target for the year by several hundred employees.

Gentile said the company now projects to add between 1,200 and 1,300 new workers in 2018, outpacing the planned addition of 1,000 workers over the next two years that the company announced at the end of 2017.

Gentile, who commented on the hiring to the WBJ following a delivery event for the CH-53K helicopter program on Friday, said that overall the hiring has gone well.

He also credited the ongoing partnership with Wichita State University and its technical-training arm at WSU Tech in helping the company meet its growing workforce demands.

“That partnership has been great,” Gentile said.

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, on hand for the delivery event, said that he and Gentile had discussed those very workforce demands earlier in the day and that support for such hiring initiatives would remain a focus of Kansas’ delegation in Congress.
