The Riley County Police Department welcomed a new director today.
The new director, Dennis Butler, was the former chief of the Ottawa Police Department. He held that position since 2004. Butler was sworn in during a ceremony Monday in Manhattan. Kansas Senator Jerry Moran was there to congratulate the new police director on his new position.
Butler replaces Brad Schoen who held the position for the last 11 years.
Before working in Ottawa, he served 25 years in law enforcement in Alexandria, Virginia.
"It's just going to take time for me to learn about the department and the community," said Butler. "In some respects, it's going to be a very steep learning curve. I really ask people to be patient with me. I promise you I will get there, it's just going to take some time."
One of those new challenges will be overseeing a correctional facility, which Butler said will be his steepest learning curve.
