WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) announced that Rachael N. DeGarmo, Valley Center, and Dustin Morris, Wichita, are serving as U.S. Senate Interns in his Washington, D.C. office this spring.
“Rachael and Dustin are doing important work for Kansans and gaining valuable experience that will help them in the future.” Sen. Moran said. “I was an intern myself — it’s what got me interested in public service. Interns continue to prove to me that there are a lot of great, young people across our state who have an interest in doing something with their lives that will make a difference in the lives of others. They remind me that I need to do my job well so they have great futures, but also inspire me that good things are going to happen in this country because we have good kids in Kansas.”
DeGarmo is a 2010 graduate of Valley Center High School, and currently a senior at Wichita State University. She is working toward a bachelor’s degree in political science, and after graduation plans to work in the public sector.
“To have the opportunity to be part of such a hard-working, passionate group of individuals who are dedicated to serving Kansans out here in Washington, D.C. has been a unique and invaluable experience,” DeGarmo said. “Seeing the inner workings of the federal government is exciting, fast-paced and hard work. Overall, the opportunity to work for Senator Jerry Moran has truly been a rewarding experience.”
Morris is a 2009 graduate from Wichita Independent High School. He is a senior at the University of Kansas, and working toward a bachelor’s degree in political science, as well as minoring in economics. Post-graduation, Morris would like to join the U.S. Foreign Service and work in an embassy.
“It has been great to see how Congress operates first-hand,” Morris said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Kansas and gain crucial experience for my future professional carrier.”
DeGarmo and Morris assist Sen. Moran with legislative and administrative duties on behalf of the state of Kansas.

Senator Roberts and Senator Moran Introduce Kelsey Smith Act to Help Law Enforcement Save Lives
Apr 15 2013
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran today introduced the Kelsey Smith Act to aid law enforcement’s response to emergencies when a person’s life is threatened.
On June 2, 2007, 18-year-old Kelsey Smith was abducted in broad daylight from an Overland Park, Kansas department store and murdered. The abduction was captured on the store’s security camera leaving little doubt of the emergency nature of the circumstances. Four days after she disappeared, authorities were able to locate Kelsey’s body after her wireless provider released the “ping” or “call location” information from her cell phone. Providing this information as fast as possible is critical to ensure law enforcement officials can rescue victims in imminent danger of death or serious physical harm.
The legislation Senator Roberts and Senator Moran introduced today will require wireless communication providers to provide call location information to the requesting law enforcement agencies only when responding to a call for emergency services or in an emergency situation that involves the risk of death or serious physical harm.
Senator Roberts and Senator Moran released the following statements after introducing the Kelsey Smith Act into the 113th Congress:
“Protecting the lives of our children is the paramount concern for any parent,” Sen. Roberts said. “The Kelsey Smith Act is commonsense legislation that makes it easier for law enforcement to find our children if the nightmare of abduction ever becomes a reality. Because the fear of legal liability is a legitimate concern our bill provides industry and law enforcement with the necessary tools to work together to do everything they can do find a loved one in danger, while at the same time ensuring that all citizens’ Fourth Amendment rights are protected. I look forward to broad, bipartisan, bicameral support of the Kelsey Smith Act.”
“Kelsey Smith’s abduction sent shockwaves through her community, our state and the nation,” Sen. Moran said. “The Kelsey Smith Act will make certain first responders have the tools they need to help prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future.”
Senators Roberts and Moran were joined by Congressman Kevin Yoder and Congresswoman Jenkins who introduced the House companion bill.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) met with Tom Albers, Hays High School Assistant Principal, to congratulate him on being selected as the 2013 Kansas High School Assistant Principal of the Year. Albers was selected for the award by his peers, which is presented annually by the Kansas Association for Secondary School Principals.
“In order to be successful, our schools need committed, positive leaders, and I commend Tom for his dedication to helping Kansas students reach their full potentials in the classroom and beyond,” Sen. Moran said. “I also know first-hand how deserving Tom is of this award because my two daughters attended Hays High School during his tenure.”
Since 2002, Albers has served as Hays High School Assistant Principal. Previously, he served as assistant principal at Pittsburg High School, and before that as a mathematics instructor at Pratt High School and Liberty Middle School in Pratt. During his time at Pratt High School, he also coached football and basketball.
Albers earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in 1988, and a master’s degree in education administration from FHSU in 1998. Albers and his wife, Tina, have five children: MacKenzie, a FHSU freshman; Kord, a Hays High School junior; Ady, a Hays Middle School sixth-grader; Brenlynn, a first-grader; and Brogan, age 4.
Albers was in Washington, D.C. this week for the National Assistant Principals Week hosted by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Sen. Moran Statement on President's FY 2014 Budget
"The President's modest trimming of Medicare is overshadowed by accounting gimmicks and tax increases of over $1.1 trillion dollars, putting this budget proposal right in line with the President's long history of tax, spend and higher deficits."

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Ranking Member on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies, released the following statement today following the Senate Finance Committee’s confirmation hearing on the nomination of Marilyn Tavenner to be the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS is the division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services responsible for administering Medicare and Medicaid:
“Last August, Marilyn Tavenner accepted my invitation to visit Kansas and learn more about the unique challenges facing health care providers and patients in my state and across rural America,” Sen. Moran said. “Through my discussions with Ms. Tavenner in Kansas and my work with her on related health care matters important to my state, I have found her to be capable and diligent. As a former nurse and hospital administrator, I am confident she has a thorough understanding of the health care system and the challenges facing it. While I oppose many of the Administration’s health policies, I believe Ms. Tavenner is a strong choice to manage CMS, and I plan to support her nomination.”
