U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) sponsored legislation introduced today that would require a construction permit to be issued for the Keystone XL pipeline within 60 days of passage. The North America Energy Security Act would reverse President Obama's announcement earlier this month that he will delay his decision on the permit until after the 2012 election, despite the Administration spending three years reviewing the Keystone XL permit and conducting two comprehensive environmental evaluations of the project.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today issued the following statement on the failure of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction:

“I share the tremendous disappointment of many Americans today as another opportunity to solve our nation’s debt crisis has passed us by. But the inability of the super committee to find common ground is nothing new for a Congress that often puts political party above love of country.

“When I opposed the deal that formed the super committee in August, I did so because I firmly believe each member of Congress was elected to make difficult decisions – and that those decisions should be debated in the light of day.

“Tackling our country’s fiscal problems takes more than a committee; it takes courage. Now more than ever, Congress and the President must work together to address our country’s greatest threat: our government’s habit of reckless spending. The failure to do so will jeopardize the future of our country and the American dream for the next generation.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today issued the following statement regarding National Adoption Day, which will take place on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

“On National Adoption Day, we are reminded of the many families across our nation who have made a lasting difference in the lives of thousands of children through adoption. Their compassion and commitment has given these children both a family and a bright future. Every child deserves the opportunity to be part of a permanent and loving family.”

National Adoption Day is a nationwide effort to raise awareness of the more than 107,000 children in foster care waiting to be adopted. More than 400 communities across the country will be hosting events on or around this day to finalize adoptions out of foster care and celebrate families who adopt. Since 2000, more than 35,000 children have been adopted from foster care on National Adoption Day and this year, 4,500 foster care children are expected to be adopted.

Sen. Moran sponsored a resolution, which passed the Senate this week, S. Res. 302, to support the goals of National Adoption Day and National Adoption Month by promoting national awareness of adoption and the children awaiting families, celebrating children and families involved in adoption, and encouraging the people of the United States to secure safety, permanency, and well-being for all children.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today issued the following statement on National Rural Health Care Day:

When I spend time in towns across Kansas, I am reminded of what I loved about growing up in rural Kansas – the sense of community. This special way of life would not be possible without access to ‘The Basics’ in the places we call home, including quality health care. I would like to thank the many dedicated medical professionals in Kansas and across our country who work hard each day to deliver quality care to the nearly one in five Americans living in rural areas of our nation. Their commitment will help preserve the special way of life we enjoy in rural America for the next generation.”

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment along with the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health have designated November 17, 2011 as National Rural Health Day – an opportunity to honor the community-minded spirit that prevails in rural America and to recognize the unique health care challenges that rural citizens face. Approximately 62 million people – nearly one in five Americans and one in three Kansans – live in rural and frontier areas.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) this week introduced a resolution, S. Res. 328, to designate the week of November 14 through 20, 2011, as “Global Entrepreneurship Week,” which was approved by the U.S. Senate. Global Entrepreneurship Week is an initiative to celebrate the innovators and job creators who drive economic growth in America and around the world. Research has shown that between 1980 and 2005, the majority of jobs in the United States were created by entreprenuers and their young companies.

“America has long been known as the land of opportunity, where individuals risk all they have to live out their dreams and make a better life for themselves and their families,” Sen. Moran said. “Global Entrepreneurship Week is a fitting time to recognize their many contributions to our economy. Small businesses are the true engine of job creation in our country, and to get our economy growing again, Congress must encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship in America.”

Global Entreprenuership Week began in 2008, launched by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Carl Schramm, the president and CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City. Since then, Global Entrepreneurship Week has expanded to more than 100 countries – empowering nearly 20 million people through 95,000 activities.

During one week each November, thousands of activities around the world inspire millions to explore their potential as innovators and help connect entrepreneurs to mentors and investors. To learn more, visit http://www.unleashingideas.org.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) issued the following opening statement today in support of Tom Hoenig to become the Vice Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) at the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee nomination hearing:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) issued the following statement today after the United States’ national debt surpassed a record high of $15 trillion:

“Today our country’s national debt limit reached an all-time high of $15 trillion. The hard truth is our country is broke. Congress and the President must come together to address our country’s greatest threat: our government’s habit of reckless spending. Without a serious plan in place to reduce our debt, this pattern of fiscal irresponsibility will jeopardize our future and the American dream to be lived by our children and grandchildren.”
