Sens. Moran, Roberts & Rep. Marshall Introduce Legislation Honoring Fallen Big Red One Soldiers
Feb 07 2019
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) today introduced legislation honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation in the Army’s First Infantry Division. This bill authorizes these fallen soldiers’ names to be added to the First Division Monument located on White House grounds in Washington, D.C. The First Infantry Division was established in 1917 and has been on continuous active duty for more than 100 years. U.S. Representative Roger Marshall (KS-01) today introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.
“For over 100 years, soldiers of the Big Red One have been tasked with the mission and carried the burden that comes with making certain our great nation remains free,” said Sen. Moran. “I am pleased to introduce this legislation with Sen. Roberts and Rep. Marshall that will formally recognize and honor all fallen Big Red One soldiers at the monument that memorializes their sacrifice. As President Calvin Coolidge stated during his speech at the memorial’s dedication ceremony in 1924, ‘We raise monuments to testify to the honor in which we hold men for the work they have done, and to be a constant reminder to ourselves and future generations of the lessons their actions have taught us.’ There is no group more worthy of being honored than those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation, and I am proud to represent Fort Riley and work with the Society of the First Division on this effort.”
“The Fighting First are the true guardians of America’s freedoms,” said Sen. Roberts. “We must honor and remember the brave men and women of the Big Red One who in placing duty first, have paid the ultimate sacrifice.”
“It is my great honor to introduce legislation with Sen. Moran and Sen. Roberts that will remember the more than 13,000 soldiers of the First Infantry Division that made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for our country,” said Rep. Marshall. “Freedom isn’t free, and this legislation is a great reminder of that. I am both humbled and proud to recognize these service members on this historic monument at the White House.”
The First Division Monument was developed by the Society of the First Division to honor the heroic efforts of those who fought in World War I. Additions have since been made to commemorate soldiers from the First Infantry Division who lost their lives in World War II, the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. Future additions will honor members of the First Infantry Division killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and future U.S. operations.

Sen. Moran Joins Bipartisan Group in Introducing Bill to Hold Chinese Telecom Firm ZTE Accountable
Feb 07 2019
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) – member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs – joined a bipartisan group of Senators to introduce the ZTE Enforcement Review and Oversight (ZERO) Act. This legislation would enforce full compliance by ZTE with all probationary conditions in the Commerce Department’s July 2018 deal. The deal lifted a denial order, banning the export of U.S. parts and components to ZTE for seven years. If the Commerce Secretary cannot regularly certify ZTE’s full compliance with the deal and with relevant U.S. export controls and sanctions laws, the denial order’s crippling punishments will be reinstated against ZTE.
“ZTE – with the support of the Chinese government – has repeatedly violated U.S. sanctions, and they must be held accountable for their actions,” said Sen. Moran. “The bipartisan ZERO Act would authorize the Commerce Department to monitor ZTE and make certain they are not violating the current trade agreement. I urge my colleagues to support this legislation to protect our national security interests from bad actors and ensure ZTE faces severe penalties if they break the law again.”
The ZERO Act was authored by Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and cosponsored by Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Doug Jones (D-Ala.).

Feb 06 2019
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) introduced a resolution in the United States Senate celebrating Lindsborg, Kan. on the 150th anniversary of its establishment, commending the people who have made Lindsborg the town full of rich culture it is today and honoring the immigrants of the Varmland province of Sweden for settling in Lindsborg. Lindsborg, located in McPherson County, was established on February 20, 1869. U.S. Representative Roger Marshall (KS-01) introduced a companion resolution in the United States House of Representatives.
“Lindsborg is a town full of rich history, whose residents today still embody the perseverance of its settlers who first made Lindsborg home 150 years ago,” said Sen. Moran. “I am always struck by the kindness of Lindsborg residents, and every time I visit, I leave thinking, ‘I could live here.’ I am pleased to help celebrate this exciting milestone in the town’s history and we look forward to what’s still to come.”
“Lindsborg is a true cultural gem on the Kansas prairie,” said Sen. Roberts. “Over the last 150 years, the town has both persevered and prospered keeping true to its deep Swedish roots. These traditions will help the town continue to be a wonderful place to call home.”
“It’s my honor to sponsor this resolution that celebrates the 150th Anniversary of a very special town to my family, Lindsborg, Kansas,” said Rep. Marshall. “Lindsborg is a bright, vibrant community that honors its past while embracing the future. Growing up in a family with Swedish roots, we still celebrate Swedish traditions today. In fact, every Christmas dinner we have various Swedish dishes, bought from Lindsborg, including pickled herring, anchovies, hardtack crackers, and Swedish candies. I greatly value my heritage which is why I am proud to sponsor a resolution supporting Lindsborg, ‘Little Sweden, USA.’”

Sen. Moran Response to State of the Union
Feb 05 2019
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today released the following statement in response to President Trump’s State of the Union address:
“The State of the Union is a longstanding tradition that allows the President of the United States to lay out his or her agenda in front of Congress and the American people. Tonight, I was pleased to hear the president discuss several issues important to Kansans and sensible measures Congress can and should work together on to accomplish in the upcoming year.
“President Trump is right to focus on rebuilding our nation’s crumbling infrastructure – an issue that can garner broad support from Republicans and Democrats in both the House and Senate – which ought to include a plan to expand broadband in rural areas. I was also pleased to hear the president’s commitment to work with Congress to ratify the USMCA and expand trade for Kansas farmers and ranchers, expediently implement the VA MISSION Act to help provide our veterans with accessible healthcare, lower the rising cost of healthcare and prescription medication, and aggressively fight cancer and deadly diseases. Additionally, I share the president’s goal of better securing our borders and I was pleased he did not declare a national emergency at our border, instead opting to allow Congress to continue our work and negotiate a solution.
“Tonight, President Trump’s message regarding his hope for bipartisan policy achievements was an important step in the right direction, and I am committed to working with my colleagues and the administration on delivering positive results for Kansans and for the American people.”
