WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today released the following statement after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services announced it submitted a Request to Secure Water to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-Division of Water Resources (KDA-DWR) related to the senior water rights of the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge:
“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to submit a request to secure water for Quivira National Wildlife Refuge creates significant challenges, uncertainty and unpredictability for farmers and ranchers and impedes the voluntary efforts made to satisfy the needs of both the refuge and the local economy. I spoke with FWS Director Martha Williams about the future of the Rattlesnake Creek Watershed and have asked that she commit to working with local stakeholders and state leaders to find a solution that works for everyone.”
