WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, joined a bipartisan group of 21 senators in recognizing the vital contributions of the educators, students and facilitators of higher education at tribal colleges and universities across the country by introducing a bipartisan resolution designating this week as National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week. The resolution passed unanimously in the U.S. Senate.
The senators dedicated this week to the tribal college communities operating on more than 75 campuses nationwide that offer unique opportunities to Native Americans. In Lawrence, Kansas, Haskell Indian Nations University, the state’s sole tribal university, enrolls nearly 1,000 students each year. Sen. Moran visited Haskell on Jan. 29, 2016, to hear from administrators and tour the campus. Sen. Moran also met with individuals representing Haskell in his Washington, D.C., yesterday.
“The education provided by tribal colleges and universities helps to build stronger economies, tribal leadership and communities,” said Sen. Moran. “The important work taking place at tribal colleges and universities is reflected by the accomplishments of their students – both of which are deserving of our recognition and praise.”
Sen. Moran introduced the Tribal General Welfare Exclusion Act of 2013 (S. 1507), which was signed in to law in 2014. He has also introduced the Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act of 2015 (S. 248), which has been passed by the Indian Affairs Committee and is pending full Senate consideration.
