Sen. Moran Works to Prevent Federal Law Enforcement from Targeting Parents for Peacefully Protesting

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) – the vice chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee with jurisdiction over funding for the Department of Justice (DOJ) – authored a provision in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 to prohibit the DOJ from targeting or investigating parents for peacefully protesting at school board meetings.
“Parents should be encouraged to take an active role in their child’s education and that includes holding school leaders accountable for their policies,” said Sen. Moran. “Using the FBI to target parents who disagree with their local school board is unacceptable. This provision helps make certain federal law enforcement are working to apprehend criminals, not investigating frustrated parents who peacefully protest at their local school board meetings.”
This legislation was passed by the Senate and U.S. House of Representatives and now goes to the President to be signed into law.
In September 2021, the National School Boards Association sent a letter to the Biden administration comparing protests by parents at school board meetings to domestic terrorism.
In October of 2021, Attorney General Merrick Garland sent a memo to the Federal Bureau of Investigation instructing them to investigate threats to school boards.
