WSU touts defense work ahead of Army tour

With Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) bringing Ryan McCarthy, acting secretary of the U.S. Army, to Wichita State University on Thursday afternoon, the school earlier in the day touted its growing ties to the military.

As part of WSU’s weekly briefing Thursday morning, Zach Gearhart, the school’s director of government relations, said the continuing tours of the research and development capabilities at the Innovation Campus by defense officials — often at the behest of Moran — are having a positive impact on the city’s flagship university.

Gearhart said that in the last 18 months that WSU and its National Institute for Aviation Research has hosted two dozen such visits, spanning every branch of the military.

The 136 military guests hosted during that time have included three department secretaries and multiple generals.
