WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) today invited President Obama to join them in helping startups and small businesses succeed. In December, Sens. Moran and Warner introduced legislation called the Startup Act to jumpstart the economy through the creation and growth of new businesses.

“Last night, in your State of the Union address, you called on Congress to pass an agenda that helps startups and small businesses succeed. We have introduced such a bill to harness the job-creating potential of entrepreneurs,” the Senators said. “In the Startup Act, we address the need to reduce regulatory burdens, provide tax relief to help startups grow, support research conducted at American universities that spurs innovation, and we create new opportunities for American-educated foreign students to stay in the United States where their high-tech skills will fuel growth in our country.”

“You asked for an agenda that accomplishes these very goals, and we could not agree more,” the Senators continued. “We stand ready to work with you on these issues.”

Many of the measures in the Startup Act are also supported by President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.  In fact, seven of the recommendations from the Council’s interim report in October are addressed in the Startup Act.

Sen. Moran Invites Labor Secretary to Visit Kansas Farms Impacted by Proposed Rules

"Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil, and you're a thousand miles from the corn field."

Jan 24 2012

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) has invited U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to Kansas so she can personally see how proposed rules by the Department of Labor threaten the future of family farms. If implemented, the rules will impose overly-burdensome restrictions on many common farm activities of youth on farms or ranches not directly owned by their parents. These changes will fundamentally alter the rural way of life and disrupt agriculture practices across the country.

Sen. Moran on KSAL

Jan 24 2012

Sen. Moran spoke with KSAL of Salina on January 23, 2012 to share his expectations for the President's State of the Union address, and to discuss the Protect IP Act and the Keystone pipeline.

On January 23, Sen. Moran spoke on the Senate floor about his role as the lead Senate Republican in opposition to PIPA, the importance of innovation, and the Startup Act. America is a country of innovation that was founded on freedom and opportunity. Sen. Moran believes we can jump-start the economy through the creation and growth of new businesses.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) issued the following statement today regarding the Obama Administration’s rejection of the Keystone XL permit application:

“Our country cannot afford to further delay long-term energy security,” Sen. Moran said. “The Obama Administration has already spent three years reviewing the Keystone XL permit and conducting two comprehensive environmental evaluations of the project. Furthermore, the Canadian government has made it clear they will pursue other markets if this project cannot be completed. If we allow this opportunity to pass us by, America will take a step backwards in energy security, as we are forced to continue to rely on unstable nations for our energy needs.

“Today’s announcement does not bring an end to this story. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to clear the unnecessary hurdles, so this vitally important project can move forward, create tens of thousands of jobs and help our country obtain greater energy security.”

The completed 1,700 mile Keystone XL pipeline would transport 700,000 barrels of oil per day from Canada and the U.S. Bakken region to U.S. refineries and create thousands of new jobs without adding to the national debt. Canada’s oil sands are among the largest oil reserves in the world. As global demand for oil surges and Canada increases production, the addition of the Keystone XL pipeline will make certain Americans will benefit from reliable and secure oil from our largest trading partner. Additionally, TransCanada – the Canadian Keystone XL pipeline developer – is required to adhere to local, state and federal law, protect the environment, and respect the rights of landowners as construction goes forward.

The $7 billion pipeline’s projected cost to be paid by the Keystone XL consortium will fund nearly half a billion dollars in salaries and purchase $6.5 billion worth of materials and services – spurring significant local economic activity at no cost to the taxpayer. Trade with Canada will also accelerate America’s independence from oil imported from overseas.

Wichita, KS – Southwest Airlines has committed to serve Wichita according to local and state leaders who met with the airline late last week. “We are pleased to announce that Southwest Airlines has agreed to serve Mid-Continent Airport,” stated Mayor Carl Brewer. “Wichita has been anxiously waiting to hear what the future plans were with regard to Southwest Airlines and we are thrilled with this news.”

Last week, a small delegation of elected officials and business leaders travelled to Dallas to meet with high-level officials at Southwest Airlines.

The delegation was comprised of the following officials:

Governor Sam Brownback

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran

Mayor Carl Brewer

Sedgwick County Commissioner Dave Unruh

Lynn Nichols, Immediate Past Chair, Wichita Metro Chamber

Jeff Turner, President and CEO, Spirit AeroSystems

Jack Pelton, Retired Chairman and CEO, Cessna Aircraft Company

Victor White, Director of Airports, Wichita Airport Authority

“This is exciting news for Wichita and south central Kansas. Quality commercial air service is key to economic growth,” Gov. Brownback said. “My administration looks forward to working with leaders of Wichita, Sedgwick County and Southwest Airlines leaders to finalize this partnership. We thank Gary Kelly, Chairman and CEO, Southwest Airlines, and his leadership team for their commitment of this process and look forward to the arrival of Southwest Airlines in Kansas.”

“As you know, Southwest Airlines acquired Air Tran in 2011 and is currently in the process of integrating Air Tran into their company,” said Sedgwick County Commissioner Dave Unruh. “Officials at Southwest Airlines informed us service will continue in Kansas under the Air Tran name until 2013 and then a transition to Southwest Airlines will occur.”

“Southwest Airlines did request the continuation of the Kansas Affordable Airfares Program,” said Lynn Nichols, immediate past chair, Wichita Metro Chamber.

The delegation said Southwest Airlines made it clear that this is a critical component for them to enter this market. The Kansas Affordable Airfares Program, a city, county and state effort, has been in place for the past six years with a positive return on investment. The purpose of the program helps provide more air flight options, more competition for air travel and affordable airfares for all Kansans. At the state level, affordable airfares is funded by the state’s Economic Development Initiatives Fund and is included in the Governor’s Recommended FY2013 Budget as a key component of the Governor’s Economic Development Strategic Plan.

“Not only has this program been successful for the leisure traveler, it is a vital piece for recruiting and retaining business,” said Lynn Nichols, recent chair of the Wichita Metro Chamber. “Having affordable flights and many flight choices is essential for keeping the cost of business competitive. We appreciate the continued support of this program from the Kansas legislature, the City of Wichita and Sedgwick County.”

“Today’s announcement is wonderful news for Kansas,” Senator Moran said. “As a resident of Western Kansas, I know firsthand the importance of maintaining commercial air service in communities across Kansas. I thank Southwest Airlines for their decision to not only maintain air service at Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport via Air Tran, but also eventually fully switch over to Southwest Airlines, which will contribute significantly to Kansans’ quality of life and our state’s economic future. I look forward to Kansas continuing to build a fruitful relationship with Southwest Airlines and I look forward to flying Southwest out of Wichita very soon.”

The delegation said Southwest is currently preparing a comprehensive plan that includes an analysis of potential routes to and from Wichita, and an announcement from Southwest will come later when that market study of opportunities is completed.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today issued the following statement on the President’s request to raise the debt ceiling by $1.2 trillion:

“The President’s request to raise the debt ceiling yet again is a painful reminder of Washington’s out-of-control spending habits and failure to live by a budget. Our country’s debt now stands at more than $15 trillion and has grown by nearly $4.5 trillion in the past three years alone.

“Last year, I informed President Obama that I would not vote to raise the debt ceiling unless I saw substantial reductions in spending and structural changes in the way business is conducted in Washington, D.C.

“Nearly one year later, here we are again with the same request – yet the President and Congress have failed to put forward a long-term plan to address our growing fiscal crisis. The recommendations put forward by the Bowles-Simpson Commission represent a good starting point and should be seriously considered by Congress. Given the bipartisan support for many of their proposals, I am disappointed their recommendations continue to be ignored.

“Simply raising the debt limit without a serious plan to reduce our debt will only continue this pattern of fiscal irresponsibility, so I cannot support this request.”
